Here we are again… another year done and dusted. Are you as excited as I am to wave goodbye to 2018? Ready to take on the new year with vigor and all those feel-good, new beginning vibes? If 2018 wasn’t exactly your year and if you’re really not a fan of regret, then you’re in the right place.
It’s time to break out of those boxed in comfort zones and go after what sets your soul on fire. (Btw, this is a big #notetoself for me, too!) Imagine looking back on the year and feeling proud of yourself for all the amazing things you did, how you grew as a person, and all the adventures you had… instead of, well, wishing you’d gone after your dreams?
My Messy Year + “Word” For 2019
You know what’s ironic?
I used to get annoyed at people who’d wish the year away and hope for a better new year. I always had a ton of highlights and achievements to look back on and I never moaned about having a crappy year, because I never had one.
This past year hit me hard – a good part of it, anyway. Not all of it was bad, but it was the most challenging year I’ve ever had. Because, I was forced to deal with and learn how to manage things like anxiety, bouts of depression, and a whole lot of self doubt. I lost confidence, energy, passion, and a spark for life I used to have. I felt like I shrank… like I’d become a shadow of the person I used to be. If you’ve ever felt like this, you’ll know how frustrating it can be.
The Silver Lining
But, you know… this messy year forced me to dig deep and confront a few inner demons I’d been pushing aside.
It forced me to start asking for help – something I’m really not good at, and it made me let go of a bit of soul-destroying perfectionism. It also made me actually DO some of the self care I write about, find out more about my empath and HSP personality, and take actionable steps to designing a life more in tune with who I am. As in, CREATE more space!
2018 NEEDED to happen. I needed that space to step back and get real with a few things – get clear on who I am as a person, instead of thoughtlessly chasing my ambitious dreams and pushing the other important stuff aside. This was a year of soul searching and space making.
Now I’m ready to… AMPLIFY.
That’s my “word” for 2019. I want to turn the volume UP on my life next year. If you’re ready to do the same, here’s the goal setting plan I’m giving a go – maybe it will inspire you to do the same!Don't dance around the perimeter of the person you want to be. How To Set Realistic Goals For Your Best Year Yet
The Creative Part
#1 – START WITH THE “BIG” PICTURE – WHAT’S YOUR WORD?
Before you think of aaaaalll the things you want to accomplish for the new year, BREATHE. Don’t get over ambitious here, because trust me, feeling exhausted in February isn’t fun. And this is supposed to be fun!
I found that choosing a “word” and centering my goals around that really helped. My word for 2019 is “amplify” – because I spent so much of 2018 hiding and playing it safe, not following through on dreams; I want this next year to be the opposite of that.
Choosing YOUR word for 2019:
Here are a few examples of new year words I’ve seen some people use. I think it’s important to find a word that’s meaningful and personal to YOU, and not a popular one that everyone else is using – or that sounds cool. At the end of the day, it’s got to be something you connect with, otherwise it’s just a word.
The Planning Part
#2 – BREAK IT DOWN INTO 60-DAY ACTIONABLE CHUNKS.
Ever written down a ton of great-sounding goals in January, only to get to June and wonder what the heck happened?
Yup. Me too. It’s called being too ambitious with your goals and trying to do everything ALL at ONCE. If only it worked that way, hey? Nope… I’ve come to realise (learn the hard way), that things take TIME. And patience. The good stuff in life, anyway.
So this year, I’m breaking things down a bit more under my “amplify” umbrella. Instead of having a long list of everything I want to achieve in 2019, I’m setting 2-3 smaller goals every 60 days. (Apparently, it takes about 66 days for a new habit to form, not 21).
Here’s what mine looks like for the year ahead (I’ll break them down a bit further each month – this is just an overview):
JAN + FEB: Healthy Habits + Home
MARCH + APRIL: Fitness + Energy
MAY + JUNE: Lifestyle + Adventure
JULY + AUG: Personal Growth + Reflection
SEPT + OCT: Self Care + Community
NOV + DEC: Relationships + Joy
The “Getting Real” Part
#3 – SET A FLEXIBLE THEME FOR DIFFERENT SEASONS.
This is important. I found that my energy levels plummeted from about the beginning of September. That’s usually when most of us start thinking about the holidays. So, it’s no good putting some big goal like “learn a new language” then, because that’s just not going to happen! For me, anyway.
We have more energy and motivation towards the beginning of the year so I really want to focus on setting foundations for some healthy habits and creating more of a homey sanctuary (something I put off all the time).
Seasons change around March to autumn or spring, so that’s a great time to focus on getting fit and outdoors more. July is a nice time to look back on the last 6 months and acknowledge how far you’ve come. I don’t know about you, but I tend to forget to do this a LOT and just focus on all the things I haven’t got to yet. Not good! And then, the end of the year is usually centered around family and travel or relaxation.Balance is not better time management, but better boundaries and personal energy management. Click To Tweet
The Doing Part
#4 – GET MOTIVATED – INVEST IN YOURSELF.
I’m a huge fan of freebies and doing things on the cheap, obviously. I didn’t grow up with things being handed to me on a silver platter and it’s made me learn the value of money, but it’s also taught me how to get creative. This is all good and well most of the time, but sometimes, investing a little money into something that’s going to help you reach your goals is going to make that HUGE difference.
For example, I’m not a gym fan at all. But, I LOVE to dance and I miss Zumba classes, but hell to the no am I paying monthly gym fees and only going to one class. So, I did some research and signed up to Daily Burn – an online fitness subscription where you get daily workouts, and you can track your fitness progress, etc. It’s awesome – exactly the motivation I need to help me amplify my physical health, YAY!
When you invest in yourself financially, you’re a lot more likely to see things through – it gives you that boost of motivation. I mean, who wants to waste money?
Other examples of ways to invest in yourself to reach your goals:
- Book a monthly massage (goal – practice more self care)
- Join a weekly Pilates class (goal – improve fitness levels)
- Take an online course (goal – change your career)
- Buy a premium WordPress theme (goal – start a side business)
The Grabbing Your “Why” Part
#5 – FIND INSPIRATION TO STICK WITH YOUR GOALS.
And last, but not least… What’s going to make you STICK to your goals?
All year loooooong.
Just like your “word” for 2019, this one needs to connect with you emotionally, too. For me, I don’t want regret at the end of the year again – and I really, really want to print out a bunch of photos (because, who does that anymore?) and create a scrapbook of 2019, with the highlights – maybe even a few lessons, and a ton of mini adventures. That’s what I want. That’s my “why” and my inspiration.
What’s your inspiration for sticking with your goals?
Create a vision in your mind of what December 2019 feels like for you.
Where are you? Who are you with? What things are you most proud of achieving this year?
Imagine THAT feeling. That’s what’s going to keep you going and checking off those goals!
